The apheresis resource nurse provides direct care during normal business hours as well as by taking call after hours, weekends and holidays to maintain a high level of expertise in a supportive role to the team. The resource nurse provides direct patient care activities including backssment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care to inpatients and outpatients requiring apheresis therapies, cellular collections, photopheresis and central venous access procedures.
Responsibilities Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly. Supports the activities of the Pheresis Center, including but not limited to monitoring regulatory activities such as critical supplies, temperature/humidity systems, and procedure reviews and updates.
Monitors QA/QI documentation required by service and regulatory agencies. Collects complete and accurate data, interprets data in a timely manner. Participates in preparation and planning of processes that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance in accordance with multiple regulatory agencies such as FDA, FACT, AABB, CAP, and TJC. Participates in regulatory audits and surveys. Plans for team professional development, annual competency, annual skills backssment and life long learning courses.
Provides education and training for new and current team members, including apheresis practices and general nursing practice. Demonstrates the ability to coach staff members with issues regarding patient care, policy adherence and professional behaviors. Educates patients and their families on disease process, management of illness/treatment, support resources, infection prevention techniques, home care needs and medication administration when providing direct patient care. Supports the clinical manager in the delivery of safe patient care and building an effective work unit.
Demonstrates expertise in clinical knowledge base for the population served and demonstrates the ability to provide apheresis therapies including red cell exchange, therapeutic plasma exchange, leukoreductions (cellular depletion's) photopheresis, cellular collections for immunotherapy, transplant and vaccine production, therapuetic phlebotomy and care of central venous access for lab draws. Uses critical thinking skills to backss and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.
