Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear, fisheries, fish identification, marine mammal/sea turtle identification, and safety. Observing provides an excellent career in marine biology, as biologists are widely recognized as being excellent field biologists. Population and habitat status studies may employ sampling methods from research vessels and shore, including electrofishing, seining, trapping, environmental DNA, and habitat surveys. Projects will also identify population bottlenecks, including the influence of habitats and species interactions, and evaluate restoration actions. These projects may involve experimental fish stocking, sampling early life stages, experimental habitat manipulations, and managing remote data collection systems (e. g. acoustic telemetry, video, and data loggers). The candidate must complete required training, follow safety procedures, and adhere to fundamental science practices.
In the field, the candidate will participate in or lead collaborative teams comprised of tribal scientists, federal technicians, student contractors, and other partners. The candidate will be expected to trailer and operate boats up to 26 ft long and process biological and habitat samples in the laboratory. The candidate will use standard software programs to enter, manage, and analyze data under the guidance of SUNY Oswego and USGS scientists. This individual will be asked to write peer-reviewed scientific reports and present results at partner and public science meetings.
