Initiates a plan of care, which is developed in compliance with local, state and federal regulations as well as providing for the continuity of care for the individual. The school nurse will follow the current standards of school nurse practice in formulating the plan of care. Provides special need students with IEP, 504 and Individual Healthcare plans (IHP). Develops and implements school health programs with staff and community. Plans and promotes age appropriate health education through classroom instruction. Develops and updates classroom health curriculum utilizing an integrated approach.
Participates in in service training programs, workshops and continuing education to maintain professional status in accordance with the current standards of school nurse practice and the New Mexico Board of Nursing. Implements the interventions identified in the plan of care. Administers medications and treatments prescribed by the student's primary care provider (prescription medications) or with permission by parents for (non-prescription) medications. Provides emergency care and first aid for all students and employees.
Makes emergency and non-emergency referrals to community health care providers as necessary. Teaches related health skills in disease prevention. Fosters optimal mental health for students and staff. Provides a healthy, safe and nurturing environment. Implements policies and procedures regarding communicable diseases, i. e. exclusions and readmissions.
