Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian, and maintain the electronic medical record. Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results to doctor and clients, maintain and update inventory as well as client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable. Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, safely support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients including checking and recording vital parameters (under direction of the veterinarian), monitor patients during recovery, and prepare them for discharge to owner or transfer to an overnight care facility as needed.
Provide in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by veterinarian), and safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination. Participate in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule. Other Duties and Responsibilities: Perform additional duties as assigned. Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed. Nature of Supervision: In all activities related to the care of patients, the Veterinary Technician will take direct supervision from the veterinarians as well as the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty. The Aquarium's public campus in Boston, MA displays nearly 12,000 animals comprised of approximately 550 species. sea turtles, quarantine, and aquaculture of fish and invertebrates. The Aquarium maintains veterinary facilities at each campus, including medical, surgical, laboratory, and necropsy facilities.
Diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities at each campus include point-of-care blood analysis, light and dissecting microscopy with digital image capture, rigid and flexible endoscopy, Vet Rocket DR radiography, ultrasonography, and photobiomodulation therapy. Established relationships with regional veterinary referral hospitals and specialists allow for advanced care including surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, acupuncture, and advanced imaging, including MRI

SCHEDULE This is a full-time regular on-site position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will generally be Tuesday-Saturday and includes the ability to work in Boston and Quincy. Some holidays, and occasional early morning or late-night hours required. The veterinary team performs overnight on-call duties on a rotational basis as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides veterinary care for permanent collection animals and sea turtles admitted via the Rescue and Rehabilitation Program.
Supports the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to develop and provide a complete health care program, with emphasis on preventative medical and husbandry practices. Collaborates with the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to supervise and coordinate Animal Health Department staff, and directly manages and leads the team in their absence. Works collaboratively with veterinary and husbandry staff to educate, direct, and ensure excellent communication on all aspects of animal health and welfare. Maintains compliance on all veterinary regulatory matters at the local, state, and federal levels, in accordance with AZA and Aquarium policies.
Maintains complete and current medical records in accordance with Aquarium, AZA, and federal regulations. Collaborates with the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to coordinate the use of consulting and collaborating veterinarians. Supports the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to conduct Zoonotic Disease Training and Controlled Drug Trainings to appropriate staff. Assists the Senior Veterinarian with directing our veterinary student externship program.
Participates in clinical and conservation research programs, publishes and presents research. Acts as a spokesperson for the Animal Health Department to the public and media when indicated. Performs other position-related duties, as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalents) Minimum of 2 years clinical experience with one year of aquatic animal experience required, preferably from an AZA accredited organization. Valid Massachusetts Veterinary license (and maintain good standing) before start of employment. Valid Massachusetts controlled drug license and DEA license, or ability to obtain one (and maintain good standing) within three months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent interpersonal and project management skills (oral and written) allowing for open communication and collaboration across diverse teams.
