Negotiates reimbursement directly with payers or refers complex cases to Case Manager and/or Manager. May assist with denials and appeals. UM Goals To ensure effective utilization of health care resources through ongoing monitoring To determine medical necessity and appropriateness of care To identify patterns of overutilization, underutilization, and inefficient scheduling of resources To promote quality patient care and optimal outcomes To assist in the identification of coordination of care options for members and providers To facilitate appropriate, safe, timely, and effective discharge to the most appropriate level of care (LOC)To provide education concerning the UM program to providers

and department staff To identify potential participants in disease management and case management programs UM Review Process Verification of the patient's eligibility for services.

Determination of whether the requested service is a covered benefit and requires a review. Collection of demographic and clinical information necessary to certify a requested service or length of stay. Clinical information is reviewed against evidence-based decision support criteria or guidelines for a reviewdetermination. The UM clinical reviewer evaluates via approved software, based on the information provided, whether the case meets criteria or guidelines. 5. If the criteria or guidelines are met, the requesting

provider will be notified of the request approval.

If the criteria or guidelines are not met, the review will be sent for review to EHR and determination made. 6. If there is a discrepancy or dispute the appeal process will be initiated. Associate's degree and RN license required. Minimum three years recent RN nursing experience preferred, with having practiced the equivalent of 2 years fulltime nursing experience in the acute care setting. Ability to function as part of a team and form positive, collaborative relationships with social work, shop, physicians, hospital staff, patients, families and post-acute providers. Strong critical thinking skills, work independently in ambiguous situations, establishing priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain effective caseload of the work assignment.
