(90-100%), Union, Remote-Friendly Working/Functional Title Linux Systems Administrator Position Summary This position will design and manage complex Linux systems within the Libraries Systems and Development group, a dedicated team of less than ten staff members with a passion for excellence and service to the Libraries.

The position will get to work with a wide selection of technologies from virtual servers running in-house developed applications and customized open source services, to massive storage clusters and other high-availability systems. MSU Libraries has active teams of developers which are supported by the Systems and Development group to ensure stability and redundant operation

of the Library applications. The person in this position will be using leading-edge Dev Ops practices and technologies, like Docker and Git Lab CI, in pursuit of these goals.

The Libraries provides training and instruction on these technologies and practices and an ideal candidate will be one who actively engages in continual learning. Over time, job duties may develop and evolve to better support the interests and competencies of the chosen candidate. What you’ll be doing with us: Build and deploy server environments, both virtual and with physical hardware. Install and configure both standard open source and custom software. Develop and implement procedures and automated scripts to

monitor and maintain proper operation (e. g. adequate disk space, backup schedules, network connections, memory & CPU usage).

Provide support for, and troubleshoot issues regarding, system hardware and software. Learn how to set up and maintain containerized deployment environments (e. g. Docker). Learn how to use Git Lab CI to automate deployments and upgrades. Develop detailed documentation for systems and procedures, both for IT colleagues and library staff. Work to modernize and upgrade legacy systems, replacing them with newer Dev Ops deployments. Dive into intriguing problems, for both hardware and software, tracking down issues and creating long term solutions.

Consult with and work alongside Library faculty and staff engaged in research projects and experimental proposals. Collaborate with staff from other Library Units and MSU IT to set up services and to identify and resolve issues. Remote-friendly explanation: The chosen candidate may have the option to work remotely within the State of Michigan with the following on-site requirements. Requires one day a week on-site in East Lansing, Michigan. Additional on-site requirements are almost always scheduled in advance. May be required on-site for training or events. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; experience working with Linux architecture, standard tools, and the shell environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information-technology specialization Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in teams Willingness to continually advance technical skills through self-study Ability to take ownership of a project and see it through to completion Experience creating administration scripts within Linux (using, e. g.
