Position Overview The General Laborer is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist the highway, utility, grade crews or at various on-site plant locations.
This position involves various manual tasks. Work will be performed per the supervisor's instruction, free from direct supervision except for more complicated jobs. Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) Highway Laborer : Prepares ground surfaces for the road building process. Removes debris out of the construction path. Operates ground compactors, levels out and
rakes dirt, sets string markers, and removes items within the area to be paved. Sets up fencing, barricades, and/or safety cones to block off the work area as needed.
Prepares manhole covers, openings and water lines. May insert risers as needed. Walks behind paver machine to shovel and rake asphalt as it is applied to the ground. Levels out asphalt with rake and uses shovel to dig out manhole covers and water valve boxes that are buried by the asphalt. Cleans asphalt off tools and equipment after each work day. or asphalt with saw, sweeping, etc. Utility Laborer : Hand shovels to prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
May dig up existing pipes and lines. Pipes include water, sewer, conduit and other utility lines. Attaches trench box and pipes to chains or guide wires to be lifted and moved by the heavy equipment operator. Installs shoring materials. Prepares plant for operations at the beginning of the season, and performs shut down procedures at the end of the season. Must be able to closely follow operational instructions and work with minimal supervison. Ability to communicate effectively. Good attention to detail. Education: Education must be of such level as to allow for the accurate reading, writing, calculation and communication of the required materials and instructions to complete the job responsibilities of the Raw Receiving Laborer position.
Physical Requirements: Will be required to stand, bend, or move repetitively for up to 12 hours. Must be able to lift on a regular basis up to 100 pounds without assistance. Able to tolerate dust or chemicals. Must not be affected by moving equipment and machinery. Able to climb vertical ladders. Able to use a shovel as needed. Bending, stretching, lifting, reaching, climbing, crawling, and crouching as required. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Supervisor Duties: The Raw Receiving Laborer has no supervisory authority. Will report to the Raw Receiving Manager.
Working Conditions: Normal plant / manufacturing environment. Hours of operation are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Raw Receiving Laborer must be available all days and all hours. Position is very physical / hands on. Will be exposed to high levels of noise, low-lit areas, extreme heat or cold, steam, dust, and wet, humid, and slick conditions, and all other environmental factors normally attributed to a manufacturing environment.
