The Aquarium's public campus in Boston, MA displays nearly 12,000 animals comprised of approximately 550 species. Its private satellite campus in Quincy, MA includes facilities for the rehabilitation of stranded
sea turtles, quarantine, and aquaculture of fish and invertebrates. The Aquarium maintains veterinary facilities at each campus, including medical, surgical, laboratory, and necropsy facilities.
Diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities at each campus include point-of-care blood analysis, light and dissecting microscopy with digital image capture, rigid and flexible endoscopy, Vet Rocket DR radiography, ultrasonography, and photobiomodulation therapy. Established relationships with regional veterinary referral hospitals and specialists allow for advanced care including surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, acupuncture, and advanced imaging, including MRI

SCHEDULE This is a full-time regular on-site position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will generally be Tuesday-Saturday and includes the ability to work in Boston and Quincy. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides veterinary care for permanent collection animals and sea turtles admitted via the Rescue and Rehabilitation Program.
Supports the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to develop and provide a complete health care program, with emphasis on preventative medical and husbandry practices. Collaborates with the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to supervise and coordinate Animal Health Department staff, and directly manages and leads the team in their absence. Works collaboratively with veterinary and husbandry staff to educate, direct, and ensure excellent communication on all aspects of animal health and welfare. Maintains complete and current medical records in accordance with Aquarium, AZA, and federal regulations. Collaborates with the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to coordinate the use of consulting and collaborating veterinarians. Supports the Director of Animal Health and Senior Veterinarian to conduct Zoonotic Disease Training and Controlled Drug Trainings to appropriate staff. Participates in clinical and conservation research programs, publishes and presents research. Acts as a spokesperson for the Animal Health Department to the public and media when indicated. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalents) Minimum of 2 years clinical experience with one year of aquatic animal experience required, preferably from an AZA accredited organization. You will lead the veterinary team in executing programs and coordinate virtual and cage-side rounds. The role will require you to monitor interdepartmental alignment between veterinary, operations, training, and client teams. Furthermore, you will participate in the periodic evaluation of existing SOPs and spearhead additions and revisions. As part of your role, you will manage controlled substance licenses and oversee the implementation of the controlled substance program. You will also participate in local site visits, audits, and inspections from clients, regulatory bodies, and the IACUC.
Job Qualifications Who are we looking for? A candidate that possesses a Veterinary degree (D. V. M. /V. M. D. ) or international equivalent required; 3-5 years of post-degree experience in residency, clinical practice, or laboratory animal experience are required prior to obtaining degree. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in a research or lab animal environment with a focus on rodents. Customer service experience and at least 2 years of management/supervisory experience is required. A license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one US state is required, and state and federal DEA licensure may be required after hiring.

What you will do! In this Clinical Veterinarian role, you will be responsible for overseeing daily operations of the surgical program; supervision of the surgical vet techs as well as intermediate and advanced ability to assist and perform surgical procedures. Participates in the design of research projects and experiments; confer and consistently interact with investigators and staff regarding the type of animal research conducted, provide advice on veterinary clinical considerations,
animal health and welfare, training, procedures, numbers and/or care of the animals, as well as monitors results and recommends modifications of ongoing studies.
You will administer, or direct the administration, of treatment(s) as appropriate; perform and document post-mortem examination of animals-both for the purpose of providing information for a research project or in terms of determining a health issue within the facility. These may include the performance of hematology, parasitology, microbiology, and clinical pathology lab tests and procedures. Provide training and coordinate training records for vet techs in addition to the ARCH staff as it relates for animal care and health.
You will perform routine audits of shop, surgical records, environmental enrichment, and other audits; perform daily health backssments, technical functions, develop treatment plans and provide anesthesia support to all surgical cases. In collaboration with other staff members, the IACUC and the IACUC Office administration, you will contribute substantially to the institution’s comprehensive program to provide humane care and use of research animals and help to assure compliance and serve as a voting member of the IACUC. Who are we looking for? A candidate that possesses a DVM or a certificate of training accepted by the AVMA.
Must have exposure to field of Laboratory Animal medicine; and participation in 2-5 externships during veterinary school or employment at an institution with a laboratory animal facility required. In addition, at least 1-2 years of experience with surgery and anesthesia in USDA covered species. Must have Licensure to practice vet medicine in a least 1 U. S. state. The pay range for this position is $145,000 - $160,000 USD annually. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
