JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans, evaluates, implements and revises as necessary an overall written instructional plan in Veterinary Technology, including syllabi and course outlines that embody the national accreditation standards of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and regulations of the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine.
Organizes and instructs classes and labs in Veterinary Technology from twelve (12) to sixteen (16) student credit hours per semester, including direct instruction, supervised practicum, laboratory, clinical, and field experience, instructional planning and preparation, grading assignments, tests and performance, tutoring, submitting
attendance records. Conducts essential skills labs for students and maintains records. Evaluates student performance systematically and creates and maintains accurate, confidential student performance records.
Provides backssments in regard to performance measures that meet AVMA, HLC and NTU requirements and uses data to improve instruction. Uses a variety of instructional techniques and methodologies, such as: Student discussion of questions and issues in the subject areas; Laboratory and field practicum activities using technical equipment and handling real-time animal science, care, and treatment situations; Practical situational problem-solving; Direct participation in action research
projects including grant-writing, project management, and reporting; Use of audiovisual equipment, distance-learning technology, computerized instruction, outside presenters, long and short-term assignments, student teams, library research, and other current materials and methods appropriate to the courses taught.
Uses current texts, materials, teaching aids and techniques in the assigned subject areas. Maintains current professional knowledge of the assigned subject areas. Collaborates with Director in ordering textbooks, learning materials, tools, and equipment. Submits to Director and maintains all veterinary technology program, veterinary hospital, and land grant program material on the common network server regularly.
Maintains knowledge of NTU degree requirements, programs and course transfer information. Maintains regular office hours for students and faculty. Submits students' grades in a timely manner. Assists with backssment planning, activities, and reports. Assists with student admission requirements into the program. Assists with student advisement on academic curricula. Assists with student referral for academic counseling and/or alcohol and substance abuse counseling as needed. Takes all necessary and reasonable safety precautions to protect staff, students, clients, community members, materials, equipment and facilities.
Assists with maintaining current inventory of all equipment, tools, and supplies. Provides feedback on work and assignments to students, faculty and Director. Provides accurate and timely reports and documents as assigned. Assists in program reviews and accreditation guidelines with regard to student academic achievement and their success on outcomes. Participates in and develops efforts to recruit and retain students. Serves as an advisor to student clubs. Assists Veterinarians in providing quality customer service for clients and quality small and large animal veterinary services by performing office procedures, pre-physical examinations, laboratory and diagnostic procedures, anesthesia, surgery assistance, preventative medicine, dentistry, emergency care, breeding soundness and lameness examinations, herd-health management, etc.
Assists with providing emergency and after-hours services. Communicates and collaborates regularly with Director and staff regarding veterinary services, program, community services, research, etc. outside of regular staff meetings. Works closely with Director, staff, and students in planning and conducting services outside of classroom and clinical instruction.
Provides appropriate veterinary care for strays, unwanted animals, and/or feral animals in a manner consistent with the Navajo Nation Animal Control and New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine regulations as approved by the Director. Operates the latest version of the veterinary hospital database and other software programs such as Avimark, My Paks, etc. Assists with community outreach, education, and services and other land grant projects such as youth camps, conferences, and demonstrations as assigned.
Participates in full regalia in official graduation ceremonies. Attends and participates in faculty meetings, career and technical education meetings, and other meetings and committees as required or assigned. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. Supervises, guides, and mentors students where appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned by Director or any higher-level authority to which the Director reports. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Currently registered in good standing with the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine as a licensed Veterinary Technician.
Earned Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science from an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited program. A minimum of one year satisfactory clinical work experience in animal care, support, and customer service. Maintain Registered Veterinary Technician continuing education according to the New Mexico Veterinary Practice Act. Current membership in a veterinary technician-related professional organization. Valid and clean state driver's license. Must be able to pass a background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.
Must not have previous violation as a practicing RVT. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Science from an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited program or earned Master's degree is a related field. A minimum of three years satisfactory clinical work experience in animal care, support, and customer service. A minimum of two years satisfactory college or university teaching experience as a credentialed Veterinary Technician. Documented participation in ongoing professional development activities, and/or publication or formal review of professional literature.
Experience in research related to the veterinary field. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Ability to be respectful of and courteous to all staff, personnel, clients, and students. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements including the New Mexico Veterinary Practice Act, Navajo Nation Animal Control, and FERPA. Ability to maintain confidentiality per HIPPA, FERPA, and privacy act. Knowledge of current veterinary theory and practice. Knowledge of techniques and practices in the field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an office, classroom, laboratory, clinic, and outdoor environment. Surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves and protective face shields may be required as PPE. Exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature variances, bodily fluids, and equipment with moving parts. Exposure to various weather conditions, dust, debris and hazards common at sites may occur while performing outdoor duties.

Must hold a current registered veterinary technician license in the state of New Mexico. Responsible for teaching and training veterinary assistants employed in the animal medical department.
Responsible for day to day operations pertaining to set up of surgery, records, drug calculations and administration of surgical drugs. Overseeing pre-op physical exams done by vet assistants. Ability to intubate, administer gas anesthesia, and monitor heart and respiration rates of surgical patients, and to teach assistants to perform these same
tasks. Ability to place I. V. catheters, administer injectable drugs I. V. I. M. and S. Q. Ability to calculate I. V. fluid dose rates and drug dosages under the supervision of the veterinarian for shelter, public, and CCP animals.
Must be able to teach and instruct vet assistants in such protocols. Responsible for anesthetic induction of all publicly owned animals. Ability to maintain a veterinary laboratory and to utilize equipment necessary to make medical diagnoses, including but not limited to blood chemistry machines, microscopes, fungal cultures, and fecal exams. Responsible for training vet assistants to perform such tasks. Maintain all paperwork on each surgery in compliance
with NM state law. Ability to maintain a controlled drug log in compliance with the state shop board and have it available for inspections.
Manage inventory and record orders for all supplies and drugs needed for the animal medical department and any medical aspect of the animal shelter. Must be comfortable with data entry and use of computers and software programs. Ability to multitask and coordinate several procedures simultaneously as directed by the shelter veterinarian. Ability to coordinate a high volume of surgical procedures on a daily basis. Must have excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate medical information effectively to both staff and public.
Must be willing and able to be euthanasia certified by the state of New Mexico and perform euthanasia under the supervision and discretion of the shelter veterinarian and/or director. Ability to train assistants to maintain medical equipment and medical facilities. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to FRAS policies and procedures. Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices. Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could place a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk.
Follow direction of staff veterinarian. Assist as an expert witness in animal cruelty cases. Diploma from an accredited veterinary technical school. Current registered veterinary technician license issued from the state of New Mexico. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency. Excellent communication skills. Excellent organizational skills with ability to multitask and prioritize medical cases. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of animal onto a surgical table with assistance. Ability to keep vet tech license current through continuing education courses. Ability to cope with emotional stress of euthanasia and medical deaths.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public. Ability to work under stressful situations and handle them appropriately and effectively. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and directions as set forth by the shelter veterinarian and/or the director. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Animal capture equipment, handheld radios, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves, chemicals associated with animal medical department cleaning materials including but not limited to chlorine bleach and hydrogen peroxide.
Medical equipment such as gas anesthesia, apnea monitor, recovery equipment, needles and syringes, surgery tables and lights, blood chemistry machines, microscope, otoscope, stethoscope, dental instruments and ultrasonic scaler, IV equipment.
