Advanced Technologies is currently seeking a Materials Scientist to be part of a team assisting multiple nuclear development projects at its research and development location in Lynchburg, VA. Job Description / Duties: Define and design experiments for different metals and additive manufacturing technologies such as electron beam and laser systems. Identify critical activities and conduct microstructural characterization and analyses using SEM, TEM, EDS, EBSD, XRD, XPS. Research contracts and internal development with the additive manufacturing of metals for nuclear products.
Interpret mechanical and nuclear testing results. Identify materials for a particular application based on the required performance characteristics, and required manufacturing and technology readiness levels. Identify and lead development projects to reduces risk and improve MRL/TRL in support of space applications including BWXT Nuclear Thermal Propulsion and Fission Surface Power programs. Interface with nuclear, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multi-disciplinary development projects. Job Qualifications / Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience is required. An advanced degree may substitute for experience. Must possess skill set in materials science; which includes both performance and processing. Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task are required. Experience in the manufacturing of near-net ceramic components is preferred. Must be a U. S. citizen with no dual citizenship. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U. S. for its Lynchburg, VA location! Essential Functions/Responsibilities: Provides daily support to a Quality Control Chemistry Lab (work is predominately inorganic in nature).
Oversees, troubleshoots, and performs established analytical chemistry determinations consistently and accurately. Generates procedures for analytical chemistry determinations geared towards meeting precision and accuracy requirements. Reviews, comments, and modifies existing procedures. Develops and performs new chemistry related R&D efforts. Trains and qualifies lab technicians to perform analytical chemistry determinations. Performs calculations in order to complete assignments. backsses and approves results from
analytical chemistry determinations performed by chemistry lab technicians and chemists.
Authors and reviews reports and technical submittals to customers. Interprets product specifications from a chemistry perspective. Conducts meetings with internal and external customers, vendors, and representatives from other departments. Prepares cost estimates for new and existing contracted work as needed. Solves a variety of technical issues related to analytical chemistry determinations. Participate on process improvement teams. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or other physical/life science field (ex: Environmental Science, Biology, etc.
). Must possess at least six (6) years of experience in a Quality Control laboratory setting. Previous experience in a Quality Control, analytical laboratory that is inorganic in nature. Previous experience using operating instruments such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES, pycnometers, surface area analyzers, gas analyzers, UV-Vis, KPA, and wet chemistry titration. Prior experience with testing and handling UCO material. Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail. Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
