Title: Fisheries & Wildlife Biological Scientist II Position number :77000754 Salary: $1,538.46 biweekly/ $40,000 annually Address and telephone number: 8864 CR 247 Lake Panasoffkee, FL -xyz X Supervisor: Brennan Brown Description of Duties: An exciting opportunity exists for a Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Scientist II to join a team of employees assisting with management of the 9,500 acre Half Moon Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Sumter County.

FWC’s North Central Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities.

Responsibilities include making recommendations regarding and assisting with the application of wildlife habitat management activities such as prescribed burning, groundcover restoration, mechanical and chemical vegetation treatments, wildlife plantings, oversight of timber operations, and other land management techniques.

The employee will be a key member of the WMA prescribed fire team. This position conducts population surveys of game, non-game and threatened and endangered species and resource inventories using scientifically accepted techniques. The employee will also be responsible for managing check stations, including hiring, managing and scheduling seasonal check station operators

and assisting in the planning, development, and maintenance of projects facilitating public use including road and trail construction and maintenance, parking areas establishment and sign installation.

The employee interacts professionally with the public and partners, providing accurate information concerning wildlife, area conditions, rules, and regulations. Additionally, the position is responsible for assisting with the development of bid specifications, contract development and oversight, monitoring vendor compliance and assisting with the preparation of annual work plans, budget proposals, accomplishment reports and other administrative tasks.

This position provides their supervisor with information, recommendations and justification for regulations governing public use on the WMA and provides technical assistance to individuals, organizations and other agencies regarding wildlife biology and wildlife habitat management. The employee will occasionally participate in seminars, workshops and public outreach relating to wildlife resource management. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge in wildlife biology, backssment and inventory methods for wildlife and habitat, collection and analysis of biological data, fire ecology and plant succession, habitat restoration techniques, and various outdoor recreational activities.

Ability to write scientific reports. Ability to serve as a prescribed burn team crew member and safely apply fire to vegetative communities. Ability to organize work assignments and set priorities. Ability to operate and maintain area equipment such as GPS units, farm tractors and implements, ATVs, chainsaws, mowers, and pumps. A bility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Four years of directly related professional experience can substitute for the required Bachelor of Science degree. License Requirements: Will be required to obtain and maintain a Florida Class E Driver’s License and Florida Certified Burn Manager Certification.
