The Communications Coordinator supports the activities of the Departments of Anthropology, and Afroamerican and African Studies. Reporting to the Chief Administrator in both units, the communications coordinator will help to execute each unit's internal and external communications strategy. The successful candidate will be a skilled storyteller

with the ability to craft written and graphic content that engages audiences around the unit's mission and values. What You'll Do Websites and Social Media Lead the strategic vision for our web and social media presence to best represent the unit's mission.

Proactively maintain department websites using Adobe Experience Manager. Promote events in a clear and appealing way on all relevant platforms. Share information on events, programs, and relevant happenings on departmental digital sign boards. Liaise with LSA/Michigan News/media relations and build relationships to develop content for websites. press releases, and other publications Write and curate news articles, sometimes with short

turnaround times. Work with unit leadership to develop visional themes and ensure department cultures are consistent and reflected throughout the websites.

Research, evaluate and learn new tools to support communication needs. Collaborate with other U-M departments to share content and ideas. Newsletters and other written materials Write and edit the monthly e-newsletters for Anthropology. Collaborate in the creation and edit of DAAS' periodic e-newsletters. Maintain detailed records of news items, stories and featured personnel and activities. Develop brochures and other useful tools to help advance the department. Plan and produce event and course publicity including high quality posters and fliers.

Event Support Collaborate on a wide range of academic, student and faculty events such as conferences, workshops, speaker series, etc. Work closely with unit staff and faculty to plan for catering, hosting, venue reservations, travel accommodations, audio/visual requirements, and other details. Locate and reserve venues to accommodate desired attendees. Identify, arrange, and ensure proper set-up of audio-visual requirements for speakers. Communicate event details to faculty, students, staff, outside departments, and guests. Additional Responsibilities Capture the activities and energy of a wide range of small and large-scale events through photography.

Coordinate and shoot portrait photography of award winners, feature students, faculty, and others as needed. Coordinate staged photography to suit the visual needs of a variety of publications. Select and prepare images for best quality presentations in print and digital media. Lead video projects from concept to final product, including storyboards, shot lists, interviews, permissions, filming, music selection, audio and image correction, closed captioning, and creating shorts for social media.

Work closely with students and faculty to produce a variety of short films to reach target audiences on themes including diversity, academic excellence, research and interdisciplinary, donor impact, and many aspects of the undergraduate and graduate experience. Required Qualifications A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience/work history).

Minimum 3-5 years demonstrated experience in a communications-related role or equivalent combination of education and experience. Exceptional editorial and writing skills; strong design skills; experience with graphic design applications including In Design and Photoshop, and maintaining websites; experience with social media; proven ability to strategically and creatively use technology to achieve departmental objectives. The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a stressful situation, to set priorities while working on multiple projects, to maintain accuracy through repeated interruptions; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a diverse group including prospective and current students, faculty and staff.

Desired Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in a social science field or journalism is strongly preferred. Familiarity with writing in AP (Associated Press) style, Mailchimp, Adobe Experience Management, and social media (Facebook/Meta, Twitter, You Tube) is preferred. Additional Information The target full-time salary range for the position is $52,000 to $62,300.

Note: the salary range for the 9 month appointment is $39,000 to $46,725. A higher salary may be possible based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The expected work schedule for this position is Monday-Friday with the majority of the position's work expected to be conducted on-site.
