Make supervision and treatment recommendations to the State Attorney and other judicial partners that allow the Department to provide the most appropriate services in the least intrusive manner. Conduct face-to-face contacts in the home, school and varied community-based settings by interacting with the youth, family and community during non-traditional hours (weekends and evening hours) in addition to business hours. Maintain communication based on departmental requirements for all stages of youth and family involvement, gain firsthand knowledge of where the youth resides, the family, the youth’s immediate and extended environment by meeting in different locations, including the detention centers, schools, homes, out-of-home placements, place of employment, community sites, other agencies, treatment providers and offices.
Assist the youth with obtaining appropriate mental health, substance abuse evaluations based on administered backssments, and arrange for specialized testing and treatment, as needed. Assist youth and family with school and after school enrollment, maintain school contact, verifying school attendance, academic performance, and behavior. Provide crisis intervention; assist the youth and family in accessing crisis intervention services/resources by making necessary referrals and follow-up on actions taken.
Work with the youth to establish personal goals/plans and provide ongoing support to help youth achieve their goals, and maintain skills. Discuss with youth and family projected timeframes for completion of goals, sanctions/conditions of supervision and anticipated date for termination of supervision based on progress and as ordered by the court. Respond to concerns, needs and risks as presented by youth, family, and the community by staffing cases, plans or violations with the unit supervisor in accordance with existing departmental policies, procedures, administrative rules, and FL statutes.
Determine recommended handling of law violations and provide appropriate interventions when a youth violates the conditions of supervision based on the Effective Response Matrix and follow up on actions taken in response to a violation. Conduct staffing when benchmarks occur, case milestones are achieved by the youth and or family or case is complex and in need of additional considerations (i. e. when youth is still securely detained a certain number of days pre-adjudication or post disposition, or beyond a timeframe identified in statute, when youth have completed all court ordered requirements and conditions of supervision or violated supervision, and when transition and exit conferences are scheduled for a set number of days prior to the youth’s release from residential commitment, complex cases).

When identified on a position description, a valid driver’s license is required. If initially hired with an out-of-state license, the Florida resident must obtain a valid Florida state driver’s license within 30 days of hire. For those candidates not currently in the state system as a direct-care worker for DJJ at the time of application, the top-ranking candidate(s) after the interview phase will be required to take and pass an Ergometric’s IMPACT backssment and Training Test in order to be considered for the direct-care employment opportunity.
This test will be used to measure the candidate’s overall suitability for working with juvenile justice involved youth. Test results will be used for a period of six months after initial testing for candidates who reapply during that period for another position for which testing is required. 985.66 Florida Statute Requirement : Be at least 19 years of age. Be a high school graduate or its equivalent as determined by the department. Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
Any person who, after September 30, 1999, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement is not eligible for employment, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication. Notwithstanding this subparagraph, any person who pled nolo contendere to a misdemeanor involving a false statement before October 1, 1999, and who has had such record of that plea sealed or expunged is not ineligible for employment for that reason.
Abide by all of s. 985.644(1) regarding fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel. Execute and submit to the department an affidavit-of-application form, adopted by the department, attesting to his or her compliance with subparagraphs 1-4. The affidavit must be executed under oath and constitutes an official statement under s. 837.06. The affidavit must include conspicuous language that the intentional false execution of the affidavit constitutes a misdemeanor of the second degree. The employing agency shall retain the affidavit.

Manages inmate housing areas, enforces rules and sanitation standards. Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures. over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorts inmates within the secured perimeter.
Inventories personal property of inmates and issues receipts. Performs crisis intervention functions to include, but not limited to, subduing or restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, and preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods. Required to wear body armor and use weapons. Maintains facility security. This includes performing searches of inmates and other persons. This includes the visual inspection of body cavities and possible exposure to body fluids.
Responsible for checking inmate mail and/or packages for contraband. Observes inmate behavior to identify inmates exhibiting mental or emotional disorders. Uses counseling techniques or referral action, as outlined in written policies or guidelines. Conducts inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas. Physically checks doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security. Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include but not limited to, CPR, first aid, apprehension of escaping or escaped inmates, implementation of evacuation procedures, provides security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.
Directs Correctional Officers in supervising inmates in housing units and those segregated for administrative or punitive measures. Directs Correctional Officers in checking inmate mail for possible contraband, and in supervising inmates working on work details both inside and outside the fenced perimeter. Directs Correctional Officers in maintaining master inmate location counts and directs the entire operation of the Control Room or the Main Gate.
Ensures that all transportation permits are completed accurately and signed by the appropriate authority. Directs Officers in preparing reports such as special progress, minor work, disciplinary and/or incident reports. Attends mandatory and other training as required. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The Guardian ad Litem Office Senior Attorney is a highly responsible position providing guardian ad litem legal representation for children under the jurisdiction of Florida’s dependency courts.
The incumbent will represent the independent legal interests of each individual child using the best interest standard of representation in the cases assigned by the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Office. Work is performed under the supervision of the Managing Attorney or his or her designee. ABOUT THE WORK The Senior Attorney may function as the attorney in a three-member multi-disciplinary guardian ad litem team or as an attorney guardian ad litem, representing each child with a focus on timely achievement of permanency and normalcy for the child.
The work involves contact with people in stressful situations, and the incumbent must exercise discretion in dealing with confidential and extremely sensitive issues before the court. The incumbent reviews case files to identify legal issues, conducts an independent investigation of the facts of the case, researches and develops legal strategies for the cases, files pleadings, and motions, and attends court proceedings including, but not limited to, hearings, depositions, and mediations, and meets with Guardian ad Litem staff, witnesses, collateral contacts pertinent to the case, and the children represented by the Office.
The Senior Attorney represents, advocates, and negotiates for the assigned children inside and outside the courtroom. Senior Attorneys assist other Guardian ad Litem Attorneys in developing and implementing case strategies. The incumbent also performs other duties assigned by management. Incumbents in this class report directly to the Managing Attorney of their assigned Circuit for all activities related to the practice of law; and also works under the operational and administrative supervision of the Circuit Director. ABOUT THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Possession of legal skills and knowledge sufficient to represent the children assigned to the Guardian ad Litem Office in legal proceedings as evidenced by admission to The Florida Bar.
