Job Purpose In this role, you will be in the forefront of National Grid's Grid Modernization initiatives where you'll participate in the specification, design, and implementation of innovative grid technologies on the distribution and sub-transmission systems. Primary areas of responsibility include: evaluation of emerging technologies; participation in equipment specification and
selection; performing end-to-end solution design including validation and testing of advanced control systems; development of custom control logic; advancement of automation systems.
What You'll Do Support Company initiatives for innovation and modernization of our energy delivery infrastructure (e. g. MA Grid Modernization, ). Create and obtain approval for special projects, engineering design, analysis and investigations, and training to deploy new technologies and work practices. Support development and ongoing maintenance of all distribution and sub-transmission control technologies. This includes custom logic development, validation and testing, and field support for controls such
as: reclosers / relays, sectionalizing switch controls, switched capacitor bank controls, voltage regulators and LTCs, advanced fault circuit indicators, advanced monitoring equipment, and data concentrators / remote terminal units (RTUs).
Support design, integration and optimization of field area network communications leveraging a combination of serial and ethernet based devices. Support continued development, enhancement, validation and testing of advanced control systems such as: Fault Location, Isolation and System Restoration (FLISR) schemes, auto-transfer schemes, Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO) schemes, Distribution Fault Location schemes, and advanced protection schemes for special applications (e.
g. DG Point of Common Coupling interconnections, etc. ). Work closely with National Grid SCADA / EMS team to integrate control systems and technologies into various applications used by System Operators, Engineers, and applicable Company personnel. Contribute to a program of work, appropriately backssed, designed, planned, resourced, and scheduled in a timely and cost-effective manner to deliver intelligent grid tools in-line with vision, emerging standards and trends, and policies. Build and nurture relationships with industry peers and other external industry influencers to keep abreast of technical innovations and their potential benefits.
Develop and progress the implementation of methods for the day-to-day business to take advantage of the operational benefits of new energy resources and demand response systems. About You A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or Computer Science from an accredited engineering school with up to 2 years of related experience in technical role(s ). Ability to create new ways to plan and operate the electric supply and distribution systems using advanced analytics and emerging technologies and industry trends and demonstrates the ability to collaborate within and across National Grid.
Understanding of the opportunities for National Grid inherent in emerging technologies and technical practices and demonstrates the ability to create new concepts or solutions that are not always obvious to others. Knowledge in control system technologies, programming, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting. Demonstrates strong influencing skills with the ability to make persuasive presentations to small and large audiences. Must be able to work overtime and/or holidays, nights, weekends as needed.
Must be able to travel overnight outside the normal work area. Provide telecom engineering support for Electric Transmission, Substation, Distribution, and Smart Grid Capital Projects. Manage (where a Project Manager is deemed not needed) & implement small/independent telecom projects as assigned by the Telecommunications Engineering Manager. Create telecom policies, processes, procedures, standards, guidelines, and strategy as assigned by the Telecom Engineering Manager. Provide technical telecom support to various internal engineering groups, Protection & Telecom Operations Organization, Shared Services (IS, Corporate Security, Gas business unit, etc.
) Provide subject matter expertise to project and operational teams as well as internal & external committees. Keep abreast of technology innovations and seek appropriate opportunities to apply them. Job Purpose Asset Strategy is a new team established to manage National Grid's electric transmission line, distribution line and substation assets across New England. Asset Strategy Engineers develop asset-related strategies which enable the creation of robust, risk-based short-, medium- and long-term asset management plans to optimize electric transmission and
distribution network performance. Key Accountabilities Leverage existing data, asset health and asset criticality information to create actionable asset strategies for key asset families.
These asset strategies should quantify existing and desired risk to the business and recommend capital investments needed to maintain or mitigate risk as needed. Define data enhancements to improve health modeling and enable whole-life costing to ultimately increase the effectiveness of our strategies to derive maximum value from our assets. The Grid Modernization Senior Project Engineer is responsible for directly supporting execution of the Company's implementation plans related to modernization of the design and operation of the Company's electric transmission & distribution system.
Key Accountabilities Responsible for the planning, delivery, management, and governance of Grid Modernizations within the New England jurisdiction and ensuring adherence to the highest standards health, safety, environmental, security and quality. Support multi-disciplinary teams across three states from distribution & transmission engineering, system planning, substation engineering, protection engineering telecommunications engineering, distribution
standards, system operations, field operations, IT, regulatory, legal, community relations, corporate strategy, and other groups to ensure effective and efficient implementation of grid modernization and digital substation programs.
Assist in developing project approval documentation with need statement, scope, description of technical solution, alternatives considered, risks and mitigations, budget, and timeline. Coordinate and support with key engineering teams in ensuring scopes and designs are efficiently executed. Work closely with internal Engineering teams and the Distribution & Transmission Planning and Asset Management teams to determine best options for implementation grid modernization technologies throughout Massachusetts i.
e. Volt/Var Optimization, Feeder Monitors, Advanced Distribution Automation, IEC 61850 and Digital Substation Online monitoring.
