and urgent/acute care, evaluation, treatment, and guidance for individual health concerns, family planning services, nutrition, psychiatry, sports medicine, public health prevention programs, and health education. In addition, the Student Wellness Center provides limited initial care for work injuries of employees and, if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care.

The Student Wellness Center may also provide first aid to campus visitors. Limited evening or weekend work may be expected, though the per diem nurse practitioner will fill in to provide coverage for primary care services in periods of absences by SWC medical providers. Reporting to the Health Services Director,

with work direction from the Lead Physician, the Per Diem Nurse Practitioner provides clinical and educational services in support of successful SWC operations.

Working independently and under general supervision, the Nurse Practitioner administers medical care to patients according to their scope of practice. The incumbent has the added responsibility of providing highly specialized and/or broad clinical duties that include planning, coordinating, and evaluating ongoing medical care of students. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SWC positions. Key Responsibilities Performs clinical examination, backssment, and treatment for

acute and chronic illnesses following clinical protocols. This may include uncomplicated mental health issues and minor acute injuries.

Provides family planning services, consistent with current medical practice, excluding surgical procedures. These services include counseling/education of basic anatomy and physiology, human reproduction, contraceptive methods, pregnancy testing, pregnancy options, abortion by medication, and appropriate referrals. Performs various physical examinations, including gynecologic, academic, DMV, Pre-employment, and respirator physicals. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, including laboratory results, electrocardiograms, and x-rays.

Counsels and instructs patients in prevention of illness/injury, including routine immunizations. Furnishes and dispenses medications and administers immunizations as appropriate, according to protocols. Performs office procedures which include wound care, suturing, incision and drainage, splinting, trephination of subungual hematomas, and cryotherapy of skin lesions. Cooperatively participates in staff meetings, in-service training, AAAHC Accreditation, and health education projects, as requested. Prepares studies, records, and reports in support of SWC quality control efforts Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to obtain comprehensive health history and psychosocial data Ability to perform comprehensive physical backssment Ability to interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests, and distinguish between normal and abnormal findings Ability to document and backss findings and establish a therapeutic plan of action Ability to coordinate screening and follow-up of communicable diseases Ability to utilize a model of Health Education that promotes wellness and prevention of illness/injury, taking into account the individual’s age, developmental status, ability/disability, culture, ethnicity, and interactionual orientation Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies Ability to participate in medical staff committees Ability to establish cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing care principles, methods, and procedures Demonstration of critical thinking and diagnostic skills in clinical decision-making Working knowledge of medications, their actions, use, and side effects Skilled in oral and written communication to meet the needs of a diverse population and health center staff Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care in the functional areas to which assigned Required Qualifications Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).

Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. In addition, if the incumbent is delegated the authority to furnish medications, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If the furnishing procedures include the delegated authority to furnish specific controlled substances, incumbents must also possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate Preferred Qualifications Possession of cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate One or more years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner Experience as a nurse practitioner in an ambulatory health care setting Experience as a nurse practitioner providing interactionual health and family planning services Experience in health care on a college/university campus Compensation Classification: Per Diem Non-Exempt Healthcare Anticipated Hiring Range: $74.00/hour - $79.00/hour CSU Salary Range: $45.30/hour - $87.43/hour San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
