The STEM Afterschool Teacher will also track student attendance participate in required professional development including an initial training retreat prepare materials for STEM lessons and regularly report and communicate program progress to the SABES team and the partner organization staff. Note- This position is casual (approx. 5-6 hours per week) and is not benefits eligible. Reliable transportation,
a computer web camera, and reliable internet service are preferred. Evenings as well as some weekends are required. Training is expected to begin in the first week in October.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities Instructing Teach STEM curriculum in in-person and/or virtual format providing guidance for hands-on STEM projects student-driven projects and structuring interactions with STEM mentors. Create and submit weekly lesson plans within the established timeline; revise lesson plans using feedback from the SABES Coach(es) Coordinate with SABES Staff afterschool provider and mentors to facilitate STEM afterschool curriculum. Supervise SABES participants in the classroom or in a virtual
environment adhering to safety guidelines and maintaining a positive learning environment.
Prepare materials for STEM lessons and coordinate with the SABES Coach(es) to order necessary supplies. Support students in the planning and design of presentations for STEM Showcases Attend and support annual STEM Showcases Training/Professional Development Participate in required training retreat (1/year) professional development (1-2 times per month) and staff meetings (JHU and/or afterschool partner as required) Assist SABES afterschool coaches in presenting training materials based on expertise. Complete all required online trainings and ensure compliance with the JHU Safety of Children in University Programs policy.
Reporting/Communicating Complete and submit weekly reports providing updates on progress implementation and concerns at assigned SABES site(s) to SABES coach(es) Review and confirm SABES mentor schedules each month. Regularly communicate with mentors regarding lesson plan implementation and support Create and maintain student and mentor attendance reports. Collaborate with Site Coordinator to ensure consistent effective implementation of the SABES program with topics such as drawing connections to monthly themes logistical concerns and student behavior.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelors Degree focused on STEM or education degree or currently enrolled at a college/university pursuing a degree in related subjects. MSDE educator or counselor certification Preferred Qualifications Experience working with students in grades 3-5 Proven youth development and/or mentoring experience Successful K-12 teaching of hands-on STEM projects and the engineering design process. Successful implementation of STEM projects via virtual learning Additional graduate level education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
