A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAREGIVER / DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP) / PERSONAL CARE ATTENDANT (PCA) / BEHAVIOR HEALTH TECH (BHT) / MENTAL HEALTH TECH (MHT) / PATIENT CARE TECH (PCT) As a Caregiver / Direct Support Professional (DSP) / Personal Care Attendant (PCA) / Behavior Health Tech (BHT) / Mental Health Tech (MHT) / Patient Care Tech (PCT), you support adults with developmental disabilities and other special needs, so they can live their best lives as independently as possible in a variety of community settings. Your support is needed in many areas of daily living including medication administration, hygiene, grooming, shopping, meal preparation, transportation, and housekeeping.
You are happy to help them get better access to the community by assisting them with educational and recreational activities. Using approved teaching and mentoring techniques, you also work with persons served to reduce undesirable behaviors and learn appropriate replacement behaviors both formally and as natural teaching opportunities arise. You are always careful to model appropriate social skills and behaviors. Conscientiously, you keep accurate and up-to-date documentation as well as promptly report any concerns about health or safety.
