will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Design Review Engineer is responsible for managing the design review process for major Amtrak projects, as well as external third-party projects, to ensure that the project design documents are in compliance with all Amtrak Corporate and Engineering standards, policies, and procedures. The Design Review Engineer is part of the overall Design Management Team, with focus in railroad Infrastructure (track, communication & signals, electric traction, structures, etc. ). The Design
Management Team is part of the Planning and Engineering Support group under Capital Delivery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Coordinate, and participate in, the multi-discipline (track, communications & signals, electric traction, and structures) technical review of design documents. Work closely with internal groups within Capital Delivery Engineering Department, as well as other departments including Real Estate, Transportation, Environmental Health & Safety. Acquire, or continue to develop, and effectively apply a working knowledge of Amtrak business systems, standard procedures, Engineering Practices, existing agreements with external (third-party) entities, and industry standards and best practices for the technical review of design packages and/or submitted project documents.
Work closely with the Design/Operations team to help estimate durations and labor resources necessary for all phases of the design review process for each designated project and monitor forecasted review schedules for accuracy. Coordinate with the team responsible for facilitating third-party project agreements and permits to help ensure design review completion and project schedules coincide. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience working with outside/third-party projects.
Familiar with railroad construction standards, methods, and practices. Familiar with railroad operations and procedures. Understanding of the design and submission review process, preferably as it pertains to the railroad environment. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Project. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong planning, organizational, and time-management skills. Familiar with multi-discipline railroad infrastructure (track, electric traction, communications & signals, structures, stations, and facilities). Ability to read design, utility, real estate, facility, and/or construction plans.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience for the Engineer Design Review position. Minimum 6 years of relevant experience for the Sr. Engineer Design Review position In lieu of education, a minimum of 8 years for the Engineer Design Review position or 11 years for the Sr. Engineer Design Review position of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience is required. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or closely related field. Strong understanding of Amtrak-maintained territory and operation.
Demonstrated experience with multi-discipline railroad design, design review, and/or design coordination / oversight experience in design management, administration, planning, construction, and scheduling. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Primarily office-based environment. Railroad right-of-way and/or project site visits may be required occasionally for short durations, based on department and/or specific project need. COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. The salary/hourly range is $103,700 - $134,460.
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary.
