The function of this position is to perform chemical and microbiological analysis of environmental samples for wastewater, drinking water treatment facilities, and other locations throughout the county. Operate and perform required maintenance on laboratory instrumentation (Discrete Analyzer, Biochemical Oxygen Demand Analyzer, p H meter, Analytical Balances, drying ovens, incubators, and water baths) following manufactures procedures and safety guidelines.

Preparing complex reagents and accurate dilutions. Performs routine Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures and documentations to comply with Maryland Department of the Environment and US Environment Protection Agency. Carries

out daily laboratory assignments and uses independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions when dealing with standard recurring situations. Enters and validates analytical data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Essential Job Functions Performs laboratory analytical test procedures on assigned water, wastewater, and landfill leachate samples in accordance with federal and state guidelines. Collects drinking water samples from county water systems. Prepare samples for analytical testing as stated in Standard Operation Procedures. Prepares, maintains, and disposes of various chemical standards, solvents and reagents, test solutions and bacteriological media.

Calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation as required by manufacturer specifications.

Assists in the preparation and maintenance of all laboratory reports, logs and records on analytical results and quality control. Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Adhere to safety procedures in accordance with laboratory and chemical plans. Participates in Maryland Department of the Environment annual audit and performance evaluation study. Performs other related job duties as assigned. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Education and Experience: Associate degree in related field. One (1) year experience in chemistry or microbiology and experience as a lab technician in the water or wastewater industry; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license. Certification for the collection and analysis of drinking water. Special Requirements/Qualifications: Subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours of work. Subject to weekend and holiday work. Ability to operate County vehicles to travel to collection sites Ability to perform standard water, wastewater, and sludge analyses accurately. Ability to maintain records and compile information for reports. Ability to carry out daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations. Additional Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is mostly sedentary with periods of light physical activity.

Upon retirement or separation from employment, you will be able to use the funds in the VEBA account to pay for your health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
