DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervises the veterinary assistant directly associated with surgical activities; Performs alterations on healthy shelter animals as designated; Performs routine laboratory tests to determine health as directed; Examines animals to determine nature of disease or injury and works with Animal Care Coordinator to develop medical or surgical treatment plan when indicated; Advise Animal Care Coordinator about sanitary measures, feeding, general care, or special medical needs to promote health of shelter animals; Inoculate animals for rabies or other infectious diseases as needed and Microchipping of animals; Testing of animals for Heartworm and Feline Leukemia/FIV; Provide
medical statements to testify in court or assist in Animal Control investigations; Performs record-keeping and documentation regarding drugs used in surgery/treatment; Communicates effectively with Animal Care Coordinator and other shelter staff to aid in evaluation of shelter animals and in appropriate placement of animals; Stays current with national trends in animal sheltering issues and travels to training as necessary; Assists in animal care and euthanasia as necessary.
