Work involves conducting and overseeing the execution of technical projects related to the Aquifer Storage and Recovery and Aquifer Recharge program within the Innovative Water Technologies Department. Gathers and manages the collection of data. Analyzes and interprets well logs for stratigraphic, lithologic, and water quality information. Conducts data analysis, enters data in databases and GIS files, and prepares
peer-reviewed reports. May train others. Works under general to limited supervision, with limited to considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Reports to the Manager of the Innovative Water Technologies Department. Essential Job Functions Researches, organizes, and implements the acquisition of necessary stratigraphic, sedimentologic, and water well data to map and characterize aquifers. Analyzes and interprets geological and geophysical well log information from sources such as well logs, well reports, and published and unpublished literature. Reviews and evaluates geological reports, studies, and data; and develops recommendations for projects. Spends
extended periods on a computer performing database, GIS, log interpretation and other related tasks.
Works on multi-year research projects requiring attention to detail and quality control. Prepares technical reports and other documents. Makes presentations at public meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences on technical studies. Researches and provides written and verbal responses to public and inter- and intra-agency inquiries. Maintains confidential and sensitive information. Ensures individual and team files (electronic and hard versions) are appropriately maintained and timely disposed of in accordance with the agencys records retention procedures and schedule.
Maintains required certifications and licenses and meets the continuing education needs and requirements of the position to include, attending mandatory training courses. May be required to operate a state or personal vehicle for business purposes. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, or a related field. Work Experience: Hydrologist II - Two years of progressive work experience in related field. Hydrologist III - Seven years progressive work experience in related field.
Geologic Specialist II - Two years of progressive work experience in related field. Must be certified as a Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) by the State of Texas. GITs licensed in another U. S. State will be classified as Hydrologist AND can be reclassified as Geologic Specialist once able to obtain Texas licensure within 6 months of hire. Geoscientist II - Two years progressive work experience in related field. Must be certified as a Professional Geologist (PG) by the State of Texas. PGs licensed in another U. S. State will be classified as Hydrologist AND can be reclassified as Geoscientist once able to obtain a Texas licensure within 6 months of hire.
Geoscientist III - Seven years progressive work experience in related field. Must be certified as a Professional Geologist (PG) by the State of Texas. PGs licensed in another U. S. State will be classified as Hydrologist AND can be reclassified as Geoscientist once able to obtain a Texas licensure within 6 months of hire. Coursework in sedimentology and stratigraphy. Relevant education and experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a Master's or Doctorate in Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, or a related field.
Experience in geophysical well log analysis and interpretation. Experience with sequence stratigraphic and lithostratigraphic analysis and interpretation Experience with sources of water and oilfield well logs, related databases, geological reports. Experience with well or wellfield design. Experience in collecting and interpreting large geological datasets. Experience with the geology of the major and minor aquifers of Texas. Experience with preparing and writing technical reports.
Experience with public presentationinteractionperience in self-directed and team-based geological studies. Experience with groundwater resources of Texas. Experience with aquifer storage and recovery, managed aquifer recharge, and underground injection control. Experience with aquifer geochemistry. Experience with Arc GIS Pro with knowledge of Spatial Analyst extensions. Experience with Microsoft Access. Experience with geological software such as IHS Markit Kingdom Software and IHS Petra. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to the Innovative Water Technologies Department; and of the principles and practices of public administration.
Knowledge of research methods and techniques Skills in using Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Access. Skills in use of internet, email, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software. Ability to adhere to work schedules, follow procedures with respect to leave and submit accurate timesheets by prescribed deadlines. Ability to make mature, objective decisions and identify areas of potential problems. Ability to perform effectively and willingly when changes occur in scope and nature of the work and work environment.
