The Role This position reports to the Claims Director and Counsel and serves as the primary litigation Attorney for the Risk Management group within Treasury responsible for managing all litigated auto liability (AL) & general liability (GL) claims.
The Main Responsibilities Obtain appropriate approval for the settlement of litigated claims. Select counsel for litigated claims and ensure outside counsel's compliance with litigation management guidelines and billing practices. Directly manage all retained outside counsel. Issue and release investigative (Upjohn) letters and legal
holds related to AL & GL cases as needed. Assist with the ongoing communication with the Third Party Administrator (TPA) and insurance carriers on the current status of insured claims.
Conduct legal analyses; advise business units on potential legal solutions; and exercise independent judgment. Protect Lumen by minimizing its exposure to legal risk and keeping legal expenses to a minimum. Proactively identify issues; suggest and implement solutions. Provide legal counsel to Lumen; backss and effectively manage legal risk; conduct legal analyses; and advise business units on strategy and potential legal solutions. Handle legal matters of varying significance or complexity related to insured
casualty claims. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
What We Look For in a Candidate Required Juris Doctor degree with 8-10 years of experience Must hold an active license to practice law in the United States Proficient use of Microsoft software (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, etc. ) Must have strong organizational skills and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent negotiation skills with the ability to influence others. Interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact, negotiate and exercise discretion while utilizing diplomacy when dealing with internal and external customers and executive management.
Excellent analytical skills. Demonstrate ability to persuade, market and sell new ideas and the ability to work effectively in a diverse group. Ability to demonstrate emotional intelligence within a high-pressure environment, often in a crisis situation, to render good decisions to resolve problems. Capable of developing a vision of continuous improvement through the application of best practices. This position requires someone who is self-motivated, flexible, and works with little supervision.
Ability/willingness to travel. Preferred CPCU or AIC Certifications Experience working cross-functionally with Procurement Experience with bodily injury and tort claims , as well as workers’ compensation claims Experience with a claims department as principal client Contract review and negotiation Compensation The starting salary for this role differs based on the employee's primary work location. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on each individual's qualifications. Location Based Pay Ranges $111480 - $139343 in these states: AR, ID, KY, LA, ME, MS, NE, SC, and SD.
$117340 - $146678 in these states: AZ, AL, FL, GA, IN, IA, KS, MO, MT, NM, ND, OH, OK, PA, TN, UT, VT, WV, WI, and WY. $123210 - $154013 in these states: CO, HI, MI, MN, NV, NH, NC, OR, and RI. $129080 - $161348 in these states: AK, CA, CT, DE, DC, IL, MD, MA, NJ, NY, TX, VA, and WA.
