The Positive Steps program provides residential Substance Use Disorder treatment to homeless men and men with a long history of criminality. Conducts backssments, individual counseling, group counseling, treatment planning, case management and referrals, and mental health therapy as needed.
Through evidence-based SUD treatment and mental health counseling the program promotes pro-social lifestyles and sobriety while decreasing the likelihood of rearrests in the ex-offender population. Clients are linked to medical resources and affordable housing opportunities while receiving SUD treatment and mental health counseling. Positive Steps is a 47-bed men's residential treatment program established
in1994 and is a member of the Los Angeles County Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System provider network. Men seeking treatment are backssed using the full American Society of Addiction Medicine backssment and receive the following services: Education and counseling groups, individual counseling sessions with Substance Abuse Specialist and/or a therapist, case management, transportation, and random drug screening.
Services will be provided, free of cost, to Medi-Cal and My Health LA qualified individuals who meet medical necessity. Assistance with enrolling in Medi-Cal or My Health LA programs is available. Women are backssed using the full American Society of Addiction Medicine backssment

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE Under the clinical supervision of the Clinical Director and the operations supervision of the Program Manager, the Registered Clinician will backss clients, evaluate medical necessity for treatment services and provide therapeutic counseling.
The Registered Clinician shall work in collaboration with key program staff to assist in meeting the overall needs of patients. The Clinician shall be registered with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) or Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Perform client screening, intake, orientation, and backssment functions necessary to complete admission to the residential program, and screen for continuing stay criteria based on ASAM Criteria. - backss medical necessity for treatment and complete diagnosis based on DSM IV or DSM 5 evaluation.
- Ensure adherence to DMC-ODS Waiver, Title XXII, CARF standards, and HIPAA. - Repeat backssment using the ASAM Criteria at 90 day intervals following the initial backssment to measure change and guide continuing care or aftercare plans. - Deliver treatment using trauma informed approach and evidence based practice protocols. - Provide individual, group and family therapeutic counseling - Provides complete, timely, and accurate documentation of all treatment in Electronic Health Record system and client files, ensuring confidentiality as required by HIPAA.
- Provide field based services as indicated - Respond to client crises and emergencies as needed - Act as client advocate to agencies and persons when appropriate. - Maintains the dignity and personal rights of all clients as highlighted by deploying clear and skilled crisis communication, evasion techniques when participants display hostile or volatile behaviors. - Develops positive workplace relationships with staff and peers by participation in professional development events and offering appropriate support while maintaining a high level of professionalism - Participates in routine clinical supervision with Clinical Director - Attend staff meetings, case conferences, required training to ensure continuum and quality of care.
- Assist with training and education projects for staff, residents and community - Serve as role model through positive, appropriate conduct and participation in agency events Qualifications REQUIREMENTS: - Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications EDUCATION: - Master of Science or Master of Arts Degree in Human Services, Social Work or Psychology (or related discipline) from an accredited graduate school.
- Current state intern number required from California BBS (BBS AMFT or ACSW registration) EXPERIENCE: - Alcohol and Drug residential treatment experience - Experienced with moderate to severe mental health symptoms KNOWLEDGE: - Electronic Health Records - ASAM knowledge - Knowledge of Drug Medi-Cal and Los Angeles County services provisions - Diagnosis and treatment delivery TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: - Microsoft' operating system navigation, outlook, word, excel, power-point, web-based applications SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict, including dealing with un-cooperative clients.
- Ability to develop rapport with substance abusing populations. - Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards. - Ability to apply management skills and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. - Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity.
- Able to work evenings and weekends, and be on-call for emergency/intervention needs. INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: - Dependable, collaborative, prompt, positive mindset, flexible, organized PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certification by an approved accrediting organization (CCAPP, CADTP or CADEE) - Familiarity with Electronic Clinical Management System - Bilingual in English and Spanish - Strong crisis management, conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
