as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to develop verification systems that enable the conduct of nuclear nonproliferation missions for numerous US Government applications. The applicant will support existing, and help to develop new, research and development efforts to advance nuclear material control & accounting, international safeguards, and arms control applications.

The applicant will be highly motivated, creative, and capable of working independently in a collaborative environment to solve challenging problems in the nonproliferation mission space. The NND is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate at ORNL. A key mission of the NND is the delivery

of R&D needed to improve the protection of nuclear materials and fuel cycle technology and prevent the theft, diversion, and illicit use of those materials or technologies, while at the same time allowing for their peaceful use in the global arena.

The division is responsible for a range of expertise, facilities, and equipment and applies these combined assets to address R&D and operational challenges related to nonproliferation, safeguards, treaty verification, counterproliferation, and global nuclear security. The division activities also play a vital role in implementation of national policy issues that strive to ensure global nuclear security. The individual selected for this position

will be responsible for interacting with division staff members inside and outside VERTECH and working on projects in a team environment.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to participate in the development of research proposals, support working groups and strategic efforts, and report results of their R&D in peer-reviewed journal publications, conference papers and technical reports. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Apply engineering skillset in collaboration with project managers, subject matter experts, and other researchers to advance verification systems for nuclear material control & accounting, international safeguards, and arms control applications.

Provide technical support to projects, working with customers to meet deliverables and address and resolve technical and/or system issues. Document and/or publish technical work as appropriate in user manuals, technical reports, journals, and conference papers. Collaborate in a team environment to develop and present research proposals to generate new funding. Work effectively as a member of a team while executing specific technical tasks independently. Perform work activities in nuclear and/or radiological facilities/environments.

Basic Qualifications: BS in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering, computer science, or similar technical degree. Demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems, and the ability to determine and understand the broader context of your work.

Ability to excel in a team environment with peers, mentors, and non-subject matter experts. Ability to engage in domestic and international travel as required. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. Preferred Qualifications: BS and 4+, MS and 2+ or Ph D and 0+ years relevant experience in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering, computer science, or similar technical degree. Proficiency in one or more CAD software packages for mechanical and/or electronics design (e.

g. Solid Works, Auto Desk, Altium, Or CAD). Proficiency with one or more scientific programming languages for data analysis (e. g. Python, Matlab, R). Experience in one or more of the following areas desired: Software development (in C++, C#, Java, or similar) for desktop or embedded computing platforms including the use of integrated development environments, object-oriented programming, and version control systems (e. g. GIT). Design of mechanical parts, enclosures, and complex systems including creation of 3D models, 2D detail drawings, selection of commercial of-the-shelf parts, creation of bills of material, and material selection for fabrication.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design from requirements through schematic capture, layout, routing, and fabrication. Working knowledge of domestic and/or international nuclear safeguards and security a plus but not required. Experience working in a multidisciplinary team. Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
