Hours per week: 40 Position Location: North Carolina, US Hiring Range: Dependent on Qualifications Proposed Start Date: 01/08/2024 Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements

of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 120 Adjuncts, 19 EHRA Non-Faculty, 15 Postdocs, 34 SHRA (Staff), 44 SHRA Temporary and 202 Students.

The department’s operating budget is 27 million a year. Position Summary: Work in the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill Department of Epidemiology on a project aimed at developing software and analytic tools to perform disease modeling and critical analytics in response to infectious disease outbreaks. The ideal candidates

will have experience in general-purpose and scientific programming languages (e.

g. R, Python, C) and an ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a large scientific team. Efforts will focus on implementing predictive and analytic models of infectious disease, deploying these models in response to disease threats, and implementing accessible data displays on web-based dashboards. This position will collaborate with a dynamic network of scientists and public health practitioners to lead the development of solutions to problems that have direct impacts on population health. Successful candidates will join the newly formed Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics (ACCIDDA).

ACCIDDA is part of the newly formed CDC-funded national network of centers of excellence for Outbreak Analytics and Disease Modeling (OADM), named Insight Net. ACCIDDA includes the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the University of Florida and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition to being a Center of Innovation, ACCIDDA serves as the coordinating center for Insight Net. Work with this center will provide numerous opportunities to work with other Insight Net centers and public health partners, as well as have a direct impact on the work of the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Experience in general purpose and scientific programming languages (e. g. R, Python, C, Julia). Skills in communicating technical information, an ability to work independently, experience with quality control and/or writing test cases, and a proven ability to document code and/or software products.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Experience with version control systems such as Git Hub, cloud- or cluster-based computing, systems management, statistical programming or mechanistic modeling, interactive data visualization (e. g. dashboards), and experience working with scientific or public health groups. Special Physical/Mental Requirements: These efforts include preparedness for emergency response to infectious threats.
