SUMMARY Under general supervision, provides maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS buildings.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following : Provides maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS Secondary School buildings; performs work within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment. Oversees Custodians, coordinates assignments and schedules, and monitors work methods and procedures; inspects buildings and grounds to verify work quality and effective use of resources. Works on assigned projects, and makes appropriate
decisions based on work experience; may maintain swimming pools and other special recreational facilities.
Orders supplies, creates work orders, tracks budget and expenditures, reviews, and processes timesheets, maintains operational logs, and prepares operational reports. Cleans buildings, including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing, and refinishing; cleans and sanitizes bathrooms and restocks supplies; removes trash from classrooms, offices, and hallways; replaces burned out lights; reports electrical and mechanical failures; cleans and adjusts furniture. Cleans and maintains grounds, including seasonal lawn care and snow removal. Controls work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
Performs minor repairs or enters work orders. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; cleans up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner and according to procedures. Follows manufacturer’s directions for use and dilution of all chemicals and cleaning products. Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; reports security issues and illegal activities; performs office duties as needed. Provides customer service as needed, responds to requests, and assists co-workers and visitors.
Opens and closes facilities and sets security systems; responds to emergency situations including call backs for break-ins and mechanical problems; assists with safety drills and annual cleaning duties. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures. Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and Experience Guidelines High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of experience as an MPS Custodian; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.
Knowledge of: Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance. Techniques and procedures used in the cleaning and maintenance of public buildings. Federal and state safety rules and regulations. Occupational hazards and safety precautions. Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace. Skill in: Coordinating staff, and delegating tasks and authority. Promoting and enforcing safe work practices. Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Working independently to complete daily activities. Safely using tools, equipment, and chemicals. Interpreting and applying verbal and written instructions and procedures. Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers and others. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required. A Specialist License is required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical efforts; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed including use of safety equipment; a job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to frequently lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Eligibility for position is based on passing the required pre-placement exam.
