trust, and delivery. They are what we believe, what customers can expect, and how we deliver. Position Summary This position is for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer who will work on various projects as part of the NS&E execution center team.
The projects that will be assigned involve government work throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving skills, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. In this position, the engineer will support design development of Fire Protection Systems and equipment for project(s) by evaluating, selecting, and applying applicable fire safety,
techniques, procedures and criteria to originate reports, drawings, calculations, and more with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements.
The engineer will work with mechanical engineers, other disciplines/functions, and/or the client. This role will be based in Knoxville, TN with periodic business travel, as required. Responsibilities Support project needs for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and walk downs at project locations, as required. Independently apply the principles of fire safety in the development of structures, systems, and components. Support construction and operations. Develop fire protection system acceptance protocols.
Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for the design, installation, and testing of Fire Protection Systems. Support the development of the fire protection components of the authorization basis documents and other safety submittals. Interface with other disciplines to provide direction, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts. Perform Fire Protection reviews to determine compliance with applicable NFPA orders, building codes, and other client requirements. Provide technical guidance in the development of fire protection equivalencies to NFPA codes and standards.
Provide technical guidance in the review of engineering analyses and engineering judgements for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops. Support the alignment of the fire protection systems design and installation with the requirements identified in the upper tier requirements in the Authorization Basis Documents, the facility Fire Hazards Analysis documents, and the Engineering Basis of Design documents. Lead the development and maintenance of the fire hazards analysis utilizing recognized fire protection industry approaches, methodologies, calculations, and analysis including advanced fire modeling Qualifications and Skills Basic Qualifications Level One - BS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college with nine (9) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, fifteen (15) years of progressive related experience.
Level Two - BS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college with thirteen (13) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, nineteen (19) years of progressive related experience.
Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Must be authorized to live and work in the U. S. without sponsorship. Minimum Qualifications Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes – including UL and Fm standards. Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol. Experience with Microsoft office programs and other computer programs. Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
Prior experience working in an execution center environment and demonstrated flexibility in work assignments. MS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college. Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000. Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience. Registered Fire Protection Engineer in the USA (Professional Engineer).
