The Controls Engineer II helps develop the electrical design for automated equipment according to customer and internal specifications; develops automated equipment hardware designs according to customer and internal specifications; capable of working with Controls Engineering Lead on any size project, eventually being able to be the Controls Engineering Hardware Lead on small to medium size machines ($500K – $1.5M), or any size replication project.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Primary:
Lead the development of controls architecture for small to medium sized machines. Program control and vision systems for cam, servo, and air operated stations, along with test and electrical devices.
Ensure the electrical design and software architecture is functional, robust, and cost effective. Innovate and use good judgment to incorporate ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards and regulatory requirements. Research and specify appropriate purchased and preferred components. Create electrical wiring schematics, flow diagrams, panel layouts, bill of materials, organize release packages, and update schematics. Participate in internal and customer design reviews, installations, and service
calls when needed. Guide Electricians in wiring and codes. Support software validation requirements.
Work with suppliers to find/develop the most functional and economical solutions to design issues. Participate in the Project Execution Plan meeting, developing the controls engineering execution plan. Work under the confines of the project schedule and budget. Problem-solve with Mechanical Builders and Electricians, debug software issues and update all appropriate documentation. Communicate ideas and comprehend information both verbally and in written form. Work closely with Mechanical Engineering and Assembly and exhibit objectivity and openness to others’ views.
Help guide and mentor level I Controls Engineers with the execution of their projects. Secondary: Contribute to the development and maintenance of ATS Life Sciences Chicago internal and international standards. Full compliance to the terms and conditions within the employee signed work from home policy. Set and maintain departmental goals in keeping with company objectives. Support and participate in quality management program. Provide necessary documentation and support for machinery operating manuals. Make recommendations for quality and cost improvements. Keeps abreast of current product developments.
Domestic or International travel or extend workday if required. Adhere to International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards. Prioritize, plan and organize work and workspace. Comply with all ATS Company policies. Other duties as assigned. Travel range between 20 - 25%. QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred college degree in electrical engineering, engineering related field or equivalent experience. Two to six (2-6) years of automation experience. Proficiency in Allen Bradley PLC’s, EPLAN hardware design software, Servo sizing, and general electrical design preferred. Proficient with computers, including programs such as Eplan, Auto CAD, Solid Works, Microsoft Office suite, etc.
Able to operate fax machines, copiers and printers/plotters, etc. Able to use inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers, multi-meters, d B meters, etc. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor. Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Visual acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens. Hearing ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
Working conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting manufacturing floor. Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time. While this position will be remote, the ideal candidate will reside in the Midwest due to supplier site locations. What you will do:
Perform inspection of components and assemblies. Monitor assigned supplier performance utilizing metrics. Monitor supplier recovery action plans and proactively identify potential gaps.
Support and/or manage special projects as required. Work with supplier counterpart on resolution of supplier quality issues through root cause corrective actions and ensure effectiveness. Report out to management and stakeholders on root cause and corrective actions. Drive lessons learned and best practices across other product centers. Awareness of AS9100 and AS9102 requirements when dealing with suppliers related to handling of root cause corrective action for identified defects, first articles and product
line variations. Evaluates supplier-non-conformances, negative performance trends and failures and determine the root cause and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Support production readiness reviews, risk-based supplier backssments (RBATs), and supplier enhanced audits (SEAs). Assures supplier process and product quality, including contractual, regulatory, and technical compliance. Interfaces directly with supplier personnel and must be knowledgeable in and capable of backssing both supplier quality and manufacturing processes and procedures. Conducts product and process verification activities, monitors supplier quality performance, and drives root cause corrective action analysis for supplier quality issues.
Keeps management apprised of supplier performance, quality status and risks. Routinely coordinates technical issues with various programs and customers. Basic Qualifications BS degree in STEM related field 9+ years of relevant experience; MS Degree 7+ years of relevant experience. Experience with AS9100/AS9102/Equivalent (standardized quality management system for the aerospace industry). Extensive Root Cause and Problem-Solving experience is highly desirable. Experience working with mechanical design requirements and specifications.
Experience in leading audits, New Product Introduction (NPI) and or Production Readiness Reviews. General experience with special processes such as heat treat, brazing, welding, plating, etc. Proficient at planning /organization, and decision-making skills. Ability to travel up to 75% of the time. US citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering Experience with manufacturing processes including machining, forging, heat treating, welding and/or brazing. Experience in planning and organizing activities across multiple manufacturing locations.

Salary Range: $109,900 - $164,900The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
