Job Summary You'll be a founding engineer for a new team building services and tools to help various internal customers understand and operate the infrastructure and workflows underpinning Equinix Metal. Operating and supporting a bare-metal cloud is a deeply challenging, multi-faceted undertaking, with many opportunities for sophisticated automation. Your team will have a broad remit aimed at ensuring that our backend
tools, systems, and processes will help us effectively scale our infrastructure under management 8-10x in the coming years.
This includes (but is not limited to) problems related to hardware asset management, debuggability of production systems, and automation of various currently manual processes. This team has the opportunity to fundamentally rethink the operator experience within Equinix Metal. We believe in autonomous, empowered teams who are given problem statements as inputs and produce APIs as outputs. What happens in between is up to the team. For this team in particular, we're starting largely from a clean sheet of paper. You will have both the freedom and the responsibility to guide the team to answer foundational questions concerning technology choice and team processes.
Think Clojure is the ideal programming language for this team to rapidly iterate? Then go forth and iterate. We have paved roads, but if the team believes that going offroad is what will lead to customer value, feel free. You'll be held accountable for shipping software that your customers love at an indefinitely sustainable, healthy pace. How you achieve that is the team's choice. Responsibilities Along with a small team of engineers, conceive, architect, develop, and maintain internal administrative services and tools Closely collaborate with product management and internal stakeholders to deeply understand and prioritize the highest value initiatives Foster an efficient build-it-and-run-it culture, blurring the lines between operations and development, reducing time to fix things that are broken Collaborate with other principal engineers and technical leads to refine Equinix Metal's technical strategy and architectural direction Engage with the global Equinix community both internally and externally Qualifications You thrive under ambiguous conditions You've held technical leadership positions You've built significant cloud automation and designed distributed systems at large scale You've developed a philosophy of API design over the course of your career You're excited to work cross functionally, mentor other engineers, and lead by example You model great engineering by writing and reviewing code and socializing the team's work You are motivated not just by building a technically good product, but also by doing it without burning out your fellow engineers You know how to get something shipped with urgency, but without losing sight of long-term success You enjoy communicating through written English.
