IN ORGANIZATION This position reports directly to the Clear Lake Technical Manager and does not have direct reports.
The position is based out of the Clear Lake, Texas plant and provides technical assistance for plant operations and project support for the upgrades and improvement of the DCS and SIS equipment. Peers include Process Engineers, Process Safety Engineer, Process Controls Technician. The yearly MI planning and Capital project portfolio planning activities drive work priorities. The individual must be able to communicate on multiple levels of organization and manage multiple tasks required by the Clear Lake Plant. JOB DIMENSIONS This role serves as technical resource in the areas of manufacturing, process automation and control systems, plant reliability, cost management and HES performance/compliance to assist work teams in daily functions by optimizing plant operations of acrylic monomers production.
Travel to supplier locations may be required based on need. Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment. KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Process Development and Technical Support (40%) Understand all applicable process technology, equipment, and control systems. Maintain and update as needed detailed functional specifications for programming in the DCS.
Update and implement control technology/ process information improvement and capitalize on current best practices to improve HESQ and cost. Communicate technical information and issues to plant personnel and technology centers. Participate in advance troubleshooting of existing process control code, conduct appropriate root-cause investigations to identify problem areas in the SIS PLC’s and Foxboro I/A systems, Process Control code, Operator Interface or hardware and ensure corrective actions are implemented to address any identified gaps with stakeholder’s input.
Provide support to manufacturing plant staff in training on process control code and functionality. Assist plants in meeting corporate cyber security requirements and maintain malware, virus protection etc for existing operating systems. Use manufacturing experience and understanding of process limitations to assist in plant optimization efforts. Support SIS and BPCS interlock functional testing. Project Leadership and Support (25%) Serve as technical project resource to optimize Process Automation Systems, leveraging knowledge of existing plant operations to support DCS improvements.
Participate in project commissioning and start up activities, including tuning of control loops, validations of alarms and interlocks, as well as overall control code functionality per the specification. Develop detailed work scopes for process control improvement projects. Assist in creating and implementing the BU Process Automation Roadmap, including providing technical support for identified improvement projects for Communication systems, Security systems, Local PLC systems, Utility Instrument systems Manage the Foxboro contract training fund to ensure that the site recovers the full value of the contract.
Utilize Foxboro training for personal development of skills to support the Clear Lake Plant control systems such as Triconex and DCS. Identify and request outside training, as necessary for professional development of technical skills, interpersonal relationship skills, management skills, and community relations. Ensure that specific goals are developed that correspond with Plant objectives and initiatives Health, Environmental and Safety Support (35%) Support full compliance of all Safety & Health related regulatory requirements including: OSHA, PSM, and Company Policies and standards.
Lead or participate in Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations. Maintain a working knowledge of the process safety management standard, assist plant in resolving issues identified in internal and external audits, perform gap analysis against current performance, and lead action plan implementation. Work with local teams and implement best practices to optimize operations and meet business/plant goals (HES, quality, cost, production, etc. ). Coach and train others as needed. Lead by example and meet CLO Leadership Expectations.
Provide process control support for environmental compliance and optimal environmental performance including but not limited to : creating DCS/Aspen process explorer tags, creating back-up tags, monitoring the MES Historian, etc. CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT The Principal Automation Engineer works with engineering contractors, with other departmental managers and staff positions to define the needs of the facility and maximize safety, quality, production, reliability, and environmental compliance of plant processes. Supports site, business and corporate HES policies and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
Participates in HES activities provided by BU management and Arkema Inc. (e. g. Behavioral Base Safety, Safe Start, etc. ) Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident, or injury incidents. Understands and Supports the Clear Lake Facility Acrylic Monomers HSE2Q Commitment. Minimal travel required, as necessary to support Factory Acceptance Testing etc. REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering is required. Minimum 8 years’ experience in Chemical manufacturing and control system design hardware; maintaining, updating, and programming process control systems.
Proven capabilities in process control systems, programming, and troubleshooting. Experience with Triconex. Allen Bradley, Aadvance and other PLC’s and Foxboro I/A DCS systems required. Experience leading medium-sized capital projects (
