Position Title: UPK Substitute Teacher Position Number: 999899 School/Division: School of Education Department: School of Education - HCLAS, UPK Program, Department of Teaching, Learning & Technology Full-Time or Part-Time: Part-Time Description: Reporting to the Director of the Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Program, the Substitute Teacher teaches children in collaboration with Hofstra’s School of Education and
a Long Island Public School District. Teachers will be called on an “as-needed” basis when regular teachers are absent and will work 2.5-5 hours per day when in the classroom (August 28, 2023 – June 30, 2024).
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Collaborates with teacher and grant supervisory staff to implement a children’s program. Teaches and supervises preschool children reflecting the values of the Hofstra Early Childhood and Elementary Education (ECE) program. Substitute teachers are expected to follow classroom, curriculum, and interpersonal routines. Persons hired for this position will maintain children’s records as directed for the days they are employed.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Completed or currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program in Early Childhood Education. Minimum 0 to 1 year of related experience. Applicants are expected to demonstrate knowledge, skills and dispositions required for working cooperatively in a mentored position with supervisors, colleagues and parents and demonstrate the ability to work with young children in a developmentally appropriate yet challenging manner. Successful candidates will be drawn from Hofstra’s Early Childhood Education Program graduates who hold the NYS Early Childhood Teacher Certification (Birth-Grade 6) and will receive mentoring during their teaching year. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Coordinates with Hofstra University faculty to plan and implement a play-based children’s program that values quality teacher interaction and discourse in a curriculum rich environment. Promotes and supports development of children’s learning, confidence, curiosity, and creativity as well as children’s self-control, communication, and meaning-making while meeting NYS Pre K Foundation for the Common Core standards.
Develops materials and curriculum themes and maintains a classroom environment that is clean, safe, stimulating, well organized, and appropriate for young children. Teachers are also expected to familiarize themselves with school procedures as well as safety/emergency practices. Attends pre-service and post service meetings, regularly scheduled staff meetings, and parent meetings both at the school site and on the Hofstra campus. Reflective activities will be expected.
Maintains children’s records, submits records as directed, and plans and implements activities that will aid all development domains and document children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development through authentic and research-based backssments as well as ongoing observation. Home-school communication and sensitivity to cultural differences will be expected and all activities will be mentored on site as well as through other communication. Performs other related duties as needed. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and New York State B-2 Initial Certification, required.

Position Title: Academic Advisor, Center for University Advising Position Number: 897686 School/Division: Advisement Full-Time or Part-Time: Full-Time Description: Reporting to the Associate Dean for University Advising, the Academic Advisor is a member of the Center for University Advising, which is responsible for non-major academic advising for all undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. This
is an on-site position; work for this role will be performed on campus.
This position may require occasional evening and weekend work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serves as advisor to an assigned group of students across all class years, from the point of entry through graduation. Provides accurate information about academic policies, programs, and options. Assists students in the development of a meaningful educational plan. Supports students by helping them to identify and backss alternatives and the impact of their decisions on their educational plans. Assists students who are experiencing academic difficulty or are at risk of departure.
Supports students as they transition into and out of college, develop greater responsibility for their educational goals, and evaluate their academic options. Proactively maintains contact with advisees and provides continuity throughout their time at Hofstra University. Collaborates with Center for University Advising’s retention outreach staff in monitoring the academic progress of advisees and communicating with faculty as appropriate. Develops strong relationships with campus partners in assigned academic departments and university offices. Supports the programming efforts of the Center for University Advising.
Serves as an informed resource for students to make appropriate referrals to other university resources, including academic departments, Student Health and Counseling Services, the Center for Career Design and Development, Student Access Services, and the Center for Academic Excellence. Develops strong capability in using the Education Advisory Board’s (EAB) retention software, Navigate, for maintaining accurate electronic records on students. Assists in the implementation of group advising programs to promote the mission and goals of the Center for University Advising.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. At least one year of full-time experience in advising, counseling, or related fields in a higher education setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. An established record of accomplishment promoting student development programs and building positive relationships that cultivate comprehensive student-centered organization. Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities, perform highly detailed work, in a deadline driven environment. Excellent interpersonal, human relations, teaching/presenting, and problem-solving skills.
A collaborative disposition and possess the ability to think both critically and strategically. Strong quantitative and analytical skills and have comfort with appropriate technologies including social media.
