doing, Oversee and lead life cycle monitoring and other research activities and collect data in rivers by snorkeling: Oversee operation and data collection from the adult fish trap at Kalama Falls Hatchery and adult spawning ground and snorkel surveys.
Lead implementation of mark-recapture studies as part of Viable Salmonid Population monitoring on the Kalama River above Kalama Falls Hatchery. This will include coordinating and participating in summer steelhead snorkel surveys in the Kalama and assisting other basin leads by providing staff and participants directly in their snorkels. Maintain project data in agency databases such as JMX and TWS. In coordination with a supervisor, use statistical principles and ecological framework to estimate fish abundance and biological characteristics, fishery and hatchery impacts on fish populations, environmental impacts on fish populations, and other selected study objectives.
Serve on an interdisciplinary team responsible for implementation of monitoring actions and hatchery reform: Have knowledge on hatchery-wild steelhead interaction studies for the interdisciplinary team, including knowledge of historical data and results from the Kalama Steelhead Research program. Supervise professional and technical staff: Set goals and objectives, develop strategies to implement and develop performance measurements and create standards for the purpose of ensuring individual and program performance objectives are met.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: The incumbent will work in an office or field environment, on a seasonal basis. Fieldwork will involve working outdoors and exposed to hot and cold temperatures, conditions with wet slippery footing. Snorkel in cold, fast-flowing, whitewater conditions up to six (6) miles per day and walk over rough terrain in varying environmental conditions.
Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Occasionally lift, with or without assistance, large, live fish (typically up to 30 pounds). Traps have moving parts, including winches for raising, lowering, and adjusting trap positions and are exposed to inclement weather and are subject to variable river flows. Schedule: Typically, Monday – Friday, 5 days, 40 hours per week. Occasionally, this position is expected to work more than 40 hours per week, beyond core hours (potentially including nights), and outside of the normal work week such as weekends and holidays to complete necessary field and office duties.
Travel Requirements: Travel periodically throughout Washington and to other states for meetings, conferences, training, and special projects. Travel occurs on a regular basis from the office to the sampling sites. Tools and Equipment: Vehicles, pontoon rafts, backpack electrofishers, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag applicators, temperature loggers and downloading equipment, coded wire tag (CWT) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag wands, citizen band (CB) radios, GPS units, and snorkeling gear. Customer Interactions: Interaction with the public generally occurs through landowner contacts, presentations, and data requests.
Regular interactions also occur with local, state, and federal agencies. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. AND Three (3) years of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: Fish management or fish research. Wildlife management or wildlife research. Habitat management or habitat research. Please Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute one (1) year of the required experience. A Ph. D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License. Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: Valid first-aid and CPR training card within six (6) months of hire and maintained accordingly. WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within six (6) months of hire and renewal expected annually. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the Mitchell Act Biological Opinion as it relates to fish management requirements and hatchery operations.
Knowledge of salmon and steelhead ecology and adult and juvenile population backssment methods, study designs, and analyses. Experience conducting statistical analysis and familiarity with associated computer programs/languages such as R, JAGS, STAN, Win BUGS. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point. Description of Job This position serves within CPW’s NW Terrestrial Section as a wildlife biologist with an emphasis on species conservation work. This position formulates recommendations and management options for management of wildlife species and habitats through the collection and analysis of pertinent wildlife data and observations as required by the operational and annual work plans, including the State Wildlife Action Plan. This position also exists to design, implement and evaluate wildlife population inventories in the assigned area. Specific tasks include development and execution of various operational and implementation plans to manage wildlife populations and conserve/improve habitats on public and private lands.
Wildlife Management Recommendations Formulates and presents wildlife management recommendations to CPW staff and external partners by collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting biological data using a structured system of discussions, meetings and written reports. Provides support in the form of data, reports, and comments to other CPW employees. Provides biological expertise through review of internal and external plans, environmental statements and other decisions documents.
Recognized as a wildlife expert for the local area, both within and outside CPW. Wildlife and Habitat Inventories Develop, plan and conduct wildlife (including Gunnison and Greater sage-grouse lek counts) and habitat inventories to guide local wildlife and habitat management decisions. Collect and analyze data to compile reports on wildlife abundance, demographics and distribution and/or habitat quantity and quality. Maintain Wildlife Populations by minimizing or mitigating impacts Minimizes or mitigates impacts on wildlife and their habitats by providing biological expertise in the review and analysis of environmental statements, natural resource plans, and other decision documents proposed by other state, federal or local agencies, local municipalities, private companies and landowners.
Wildlife Management and Habitat Studies Conducts or participates in wildlife and habitat management studies to gather biological data by planning studies, capturing, marking, monitoring wildlife populations and habitat, analyzing and interpreting results, completing reports, and delivering presentations. Wildlife Habitat Management Work with habitat coordinators and Area Wildlife Managers to develop habitat management programs and plans.
Work with CPW procurement staff on contracts to implement habitat management plans on State Wildlife Areas. Wildlife Population Management Employs computer-based wildlife population models by interpretation and manipulation of data obtained from wildlife inventories, hunter harvest data, other field observations, and research results. Develop and Implement Wildlife and Habitat Management Plans Formulates management plans, by compiling data, soliciting public and agency comments, negotiating options, analyzing results and writing final plans.
Implements or adapts existing plans or programs to meet wildlife and habitat conservation objectives. Educate and Inform the Public Educates and informs the public on all facets of wildlife and habitat management through dissemination of wildlife information to hunters, wildlife constituents, schools, and public media including newspapers and radio/television. This position will serve as the frontline lead for the public Information Center in the Region III Fish and Game office located in Fairbanks.
The Information Center assists people from around the world, answering questions about hunting and trapping regulations, hunting opportunities, hunter education, and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide. The Information Center also provides services such as sealing hides and furs, harvest reporting, sample collection and other services required by regulation. The purpose of the work unit is to gather, evaluate and summarize data and observations on terrestrial wildlife and habitat resources. This work unit develops and participates in the implementation of recommendations consistent with CPW’s Strategic Plan and direction provided by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission for the wise stewardship of wildlife populations and habitat in the Northwest Region of Colorado.
This position serves within CPW’s NW Terrestrial Section as a wildlife biologist with an emphasis on species conservation work. This position formulates recommendations and management options for management of wildlife species and habitats through the collection and analysis of pertinent wildlife data and observations as required by the operational and annual work plans, including the State Wildlife Action Plan. This position also exists to design, implement and evaluate wildlife population inventories in the assigned area. Specific tasks include development and execution of various operational and implementation plans to manage wildlife populations and conserve/improve habitats on public and private lands.
Wildlife Management Recommendations Formulates and presents wildlife management recommendations to CPW staff and external partners by collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting biological data using a structured system of discussions, meetings and written reports. Provides support in the form of data, reports, and comments to other CPW employees. Provides biological expertise through review of internal and external plans, environmental statements and other decisions documents.
Recognized as a wildlife expert for the local area, both within and outside CPW. Wildlife and Habitat Inventories Develop, plan and conduct wildlife (including Gunnison and Greater sage-grouse lek counts) and habitat inventories to guide local wildlife and habitat management decisions. Collect and analyze data to compile reports on wildlife abundance, demographics and distribution and/or habitat quantity and quality. Maintain Wildlife Populations by minimizing or mitigating impacts Minimizes or mitigates impacts on wildlife and their habitats by providing biological expertise in the review and analysis of environmental statements, natural resource plans, and other decision documents proposed by other state, federal or local agencies, local municipalities, private companies and landowners.
Wildlife Management and Habitat Studies Conducts or participates in wildlife and habitat management studies to gather biological data by planning studies, capturing, marking, monitoring wildlife populations and habitat, analyzing and interpreting results, completing reports, and delivering presentations. Wildlife Habitat Management Work with habitat coordinators and Area Wildlife Managers to develop habitat management programs and plans.
Work with CPW procurement staff on contracts to implement habitat management plans on State Wildlife Areas. Wildlife Population Management Employs computer-based wildlife population models by interpretation and manipulation of data obtained from wildlife inventories, hunter harvest data, other field observations, and research results. Develop and Implement Wildlife and Habitat Management Plans Formulates management plans, by compiling data, soliciting public and agency comments, negotiating options, analyzing results and writing final plans.
Implements or adapts existing plans or programs to meet wildlife and habitat conservation objectives. Educate and Inform the Public Educates and informs the public on all facets of wildlife and habitat management through dissemination of wildlife information to hunters, wildlife constituents, schools, and public media including newspapers and radio/television. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Two years of professional experience in wildlife biology, conservation biology, biology or field related to the work assigned to the position AND a Bachelor's Degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, natural resource management or closely related field.

This role requires conducting surveys that involve transportation in helicopters and fixed-winged aircraft, therefore low sensitivity to motion sickness is mandatory to meet the needs of this role. : Ability for sustained flight time (6 hours with refueling breaks) in helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft on wildlife surveys. These flights may be low level and involve banked turns.
